Citing Sources

Give Credit to the Author

When you are writing a paper, it is important to give credit to all the sources you use. Whenever you quote, paraphrase, summarize, or otherwise refer to the work of another, you are required to cite its source, either by parenthetical citation or by using a footnote.

Avoid Plagarism

Another good reason to cite your sources is to avoid plagiarism.

Plagiarism is a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work or taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own.

Intentional or unintentional, plagiarism can result in serious consequences. The punishment for plagiarism can range from failing a course to being expelled from your high school, college or university.
